Goddess of Sex and War

iconHymn to Aphrodite

1Daughter of Zeus,
2Immortal Aphrodite,
3Queen of the broidered throne,
4distress'd I pray thee,
5Weaver of wiles,
6break not my heart with anguish,
7O Goddess, hear me!
8Now hither come, as once before thou camest,
9Hearing my voice afar, and lean to listen;
10Camest with golden chariot, leaving swiftly
11Thy father's dwelling.
12Beautiful, fleet thy sparrows drew thee hither,
13Round the dark earth
14from heaven's height descending,
15Whirled they with wings
16through deeps of middle aether,
17Fluttering came they.
18Then thou, blest once, with lips immortal smiling,
19Didst ask -
20Why weepest thou? What is befallen?
21 Whom wouldst thy heart and beauty
22 draw to love thee?
23 Who wrongs thee, Sappho?
24 She who spurns gifts shall give;
21who flies shall follow;
22If she loves not, unwilling soon shall love thee."
23Ah, come, from care release, fulfil my yearning;
24Help, I beseech thee.

28distress'd I pray thee,
