39   Strength

The Cart and Esus

1A Cart bearing a heavy load and driven along a muddy and uneven path became stuck.
2In frustration, the driver of the Cart yelled out: Alas Oh gods! For what minor transgression warrants such imposition?
3The driver then pulled out his whip and started to torment the horses to pull the Cart out.
4Yet the more the driver lashed the horses, the deeper the wheels of the Cart sank into the mire.
5Again, the driver called out in frustration: Damn ye gods! For now even if I remove myself from this predicament, my horses are lame.
6With no amount of yelling or cursing moving the Cart, the driver then stepped down and knelt upon the side of the path, saying:
7Oh mighty Esus, grant me your strength in my hour of distress.
8At that moment, Esus appeared and said thus: Behold! Neither gods, nor beasts, nor other man be responsible for your heavy load but thee.
9Cease your cursing and your whining and get up and put your shoulder to the wheel.
10Verily, the gods help those that seek in honor to help themselves.
