14   Discipline

The Farmer and the Cranes

1Some Cranes made their feeding grounds on some newly sown plowlands.
2For a time the Farmer, chased them away by the terror he inspired brandishing an empty sling.
3But after a while, when the birds found that the sling was only swung in the air, they ceased to take any notice of it and would not move.
4The Farmer, on seeing this, charged his sling with stones, and then killed a great number.
5The remaining birds at once forsook his fields, crying to each other thus:
6Alas, our contempt did blind us to what we believed as hollow threats of fear and terror.
7Verily, for where there is smoke, there is surely some fire.
