14 Discipline

1	Some Cranes made their feeding grounds on some newly sown plowlands.
2	For a time the Farmer, chased them away by the terror he inspired brandishing an empty sling.
3	But after a while, when the birds found that the sling was only swung in the air, they ceased to take any notice of it and would not move.
4	The Farmer, on seeing this, charged his sling with stones, and then killed a great number.
5	The remaining birds at once forsook his fields, crying to each other thus:
6	Alas, our contempt did blind us to what we believed as hollow threats of fear and terror.
7	Verily, for where there is smoke, there is surely some fire.
