A man or woman who care not for knowledge,
May live for only so long as a wild animal,
Before a more dangerous predator kill them,
Or they starve or die of thirst or illness from ignorance.
A family or tribe who care not for knowledge and law,
May only exist for so long,
Before the women are injured or driven from camp,
And the men kill each other,
Leaving only old women and orphans.
Such families and tribes who destroyed themselves,
Are the spirits in the wind.
No people may be at harmony and wisdom without knowledge,
Without truth and without respect of rule of law.
The eight paths of knowledge be the sacred bedrock of all peoples.
The eight paths of knowledge be the foundation of civilized people:
The Count and Name of Generations;
The Count and Name of Species;
The Count and Name of Foods;
The Count and Name of Country;
The Count and Name of Days and Seasons;
The Count and Name of Moons and Years;
The Count and Name of Constellations;
The Count and Name of Law.
A boy and girl must learn to become a man or woman,
And respect their heritage, the knowledge and civilization of the people.
A man and woman must learn self discipline,
And honor custom and right ceremony.
A young law man must learn humility,
And honor the eight paths of knowledge.
A senior elder must protect the dreaming,
And advanced knowledge of the civilization,
And to die to all things of this world,
That they may return as strong spirit to assist the tribe.
This is why the most wise of ancient elders sung:
"To Live; One Dies"
