Book 8 – The Wars

5   The Wars of People

1The greatest enemy a man or woman ever face,
2Be revealed in reaching over a still stream or pond.
3The greatest battle be the one each man and woman must face alone:
4The battle within between honoring law and rebellion;
5The battle within between right intention and weak intention;
6The battle within between right knowledge and false fears.
7The wars between the people came not because of divisions of community,
8But because of division within the spirit of each man and woman.
9False magicians did not come because people were ignorant and easily tricked,
10But because they refused to listen to the wisdom of the spirit inside themselves.
11Right law was corrupted not because people did not remember the old ways of ancestors,
12But because people were not willing to suffer the cost of honoring First Law and Second Law.
13An honorable man in First and Second Law is never alone:
14He be protected on all sides against evil and danger.
15But no guardian spirit or ancestor can fight these battles within.
16No ancestor spirit can walk the path or make the choice for you.
17This be the deepest of wisdom of the universal dreaming.
18Your free will is the same as the divine creator spirit.
19You must choose your path.
20You must learn the lessons of war.
21That all war is futile, even within.
22Only discipline, vigilance against injustice;
23Only intolerance against falsity can win a lasting peace,
24With intention and every action is a test of the truce.
