The most stable chemical system for transmitting the knowledge of cellular and protein construction are the RNA and DNA molecules (genetic code). All cells possess either RNA, DNA or both. The arrangement of molecular bases within RNA and DNA strands are in turn decoded within the universal functions of cells as instructions for the production and maintenance of cellular activity.

Some genetic code stores specific instructions that are critical to the growth and function of a species. These particular strands of DNA or RNA are called “genes” or “gene sequences”. The principle difference between complex species can be found in the unique variations of genes within their DNA Genome.
