2.9 Prolongation

Article 80 - Life support

Life Support is a broad term used to describe a range of technologies enabling the sustainment of life of an organism that would otherwise die as a result of some induced state, terminal illness,malfunction or injury.

Life Support Technologies may be defined according to Critical (Advanced) or Temporary (Basic) including:

(i) Critical (Advanced) Technologies include but are not limited to feeding tubes, heart/lung by-pass, dialysis, mechanical ventilation, artificial pacemaker/heart; and

(ii) Temporary (Basic) Technologies include but are not limited to defibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and urinary catheterization.

A man or woman, having reached the age of majority and still being of sound mind may execute at any time an affirmation governing the withholding of life-support treatment.

Canon 5066 (link)

A man or woman willingly and deliberately appointed by a patient on life-support as their fiduciary and guardian, may upon previous written, witnessed and sealed will and testament execute at any time an affirmation governing the withholding of life-support treatment.
