VI.   Institution

A Parish is a constituted ecclesiastical and civil administrative sub-division of a Church, distinguished by certain territorial limits defining the domicile and location of a Congregation, a Sanctuary and place of worship directed by a properly appointed Priest, or Minister or Clergy as Head of the Parish in accord with these Canons.

The word Parish originates from the Latin word parochia, from Ancient Greek παρоικία (paroikia) meaning  “a foreign dwelling”) from παρά (para, “beside”) + οἶκος (oikos, “house”).

A Parish is distinct from a Church and may be regarded as a separate juridic person and in civil law may be viewed as an unincorporated association.
