Epic of Atrahasis

iconChapter - 7

1A man...
2A man...
3The son to his father...
4They sat and...
5He was carrying...
6He saw...
7Ellil...
8They took hold of...
9Made new picks and spades,
10Made big canals,
11To feed people and sustain the gods.
12600 years, less than 600, passed,
13And the country was as noisy as a bellowing bull.
14The god grew restless at their racket,
15Ellil had to listen to their noise.
16He addressed the great gods,
17The noise of mankind has become too much,
18I am losing sleep over their racket.
19Give the order that suruppu-disease shall break out,
20Now there was one Atrahasis
21Whose ear was open to his god Enki.
22He would speak with his god
23And his god would speak with him.
24Atrahasis made his voice heard
25And spoke to his lord,
26How long will the gods make us suffer?
27Will they make us suffer illness forever?
28Enki made his voice heard
29And spoke to his servant:
30Call the elders, the senior men!
31Start an uprising in your own house,
32Let the heralds proclaim...
33Let them make a loud noise in the land:
34Do not revere your gods,
35Do not pray to your goddesses,
36But search out the door of Namtara.
37Bring as baked loaf into his presence.
38May the flour offerings reach him.
39May he be shamed by the presents
40And wipe away his hand.
41Atrahasis took the order,
42Gathered the elders to his door.
43Atrahasis made his voice heard
44And spoke to the elders:
45I have called the elders, the senior men!
46Start an uprising in your own house,
47Let the heralds proclaim...
48Let them make a loud noise in the land:
49Do not revere your gods,
50Do not pray to your goddesses,
51But search out the door of Namtara.
52Bring as baked loaf into his presence.
53May the flour offerings reach him.
54May he be shamed by the presents
55And wipe away his hand.
56The elders listened to his speech;
57They built a temple for Namtara in the city.
58Heralds proclaimed...
59They made a loud noise in the land.
60They did not revere their god,
61they did not pray to their goddess,
62But searched out the door of Namtara,
63Brought a baked loaf into his presence
64The flour offerings reached him.
65And he was shamed by the presents.
66And wiped away his hand.
67The suruppu-disease left them.
68The gods went back to their regular offerings.
