7   The Count and Name of Foods

1To name and count and prepare Right Food:
2Before one hunts animals;
3Before one picks fruits or nuts or grasses;
4Before one opens the nests of insects;
5One must know lawful food from forbidden and taboo food;
6One must know good food from bad or poison food.
7This is called the third path of knowledge.
8A boy or girl who do not know the name and count of species,
9Will mistake bad fruits for good fruits;
10Will waste spear and stick chasing animal the wrong way;
11Will scatter the animals with their noise;
12Will cook wrong and make themselves sick;
13Will break the law in eating forbidden and taboo food.
14Before one count and name and know the preparation of right food,
15One must have second knowledge of species of all animals and plants.
16Before one count and name species and plants,
17One must have first knowledge of moiety, family and generations.
18This is why we call the count and name of food the third path of knowledge.
19What be third knowledge?
20It is the wisdom and knowledge and law of ancestors about food:
21It is the respect of every living animal and plant,
22That allows its spirit to become one with the people for food.
23To never hunt, except for food and supplies;
24To never harvest or burn plants and grasses and trees, except at the right time;
25To never pick fruit too early, or too late after the birds and bats spoil it;
26To never be greedy with food or to over hunt or over burn;
27To avoid killing pregnant animals because this will cause them to die out;
28To take care of healing plants and never cause them to die from damage or over use;
29To avoid torturing animals, because this causes the transfer of negative spirit;
30To honor custom in the right preparation of right food;
31To stay away from foods that cause narcotic effects, except in proper ceremony;
32As the ancient and wisest ancestor women sung:
33"Right Food Live; Wrong Food Die"
