Prolongation, or “life sustaining treatment” is the attempt to extend the quality and amount of time a species may normally live.

The word prolongation is derived from the Latin pro - “for, by virtue of” and longus meaning “vast, protracted”.

A man or woman, having reached the age of majority and still being of sound mind may execute at any time an affirmation governing the withholding of life-sustaining treatment.
