Book 1 – The Beginning

10   The Count and Name of Moons and Years

1The moon be our guardian,
2And Great spirit.
3The moon lights the land,
4And reveals the song lines.
5He tells us the path and the way.
6He reminds us of the great stories,
7Of life, of death and return.
8He teaches us to hunt in darkness;
9He shows us to hunt in great light;
10He comforts the ill and sick;
11He accompanies the ancestors;
12He dances with us in ceremony;
13He laughs with us at camp;
14He visits each of the great constellations;
15He celebrates a new born of the family;
16He comforts us in our sorrow;
17He reveals the truth;
18He never lies;
19He is a great guardian of dreaming.
20To count the arrival of moon by full face,
21Is to count a cycle.
22There be two hundred and thirty five cycle of the moon,
23To nineteen cycles of seasons as one Generation,
24And six thousand nine hundred and forty days.
25This be the sixth knowledge,
26And the knowledge of elders of ceremony.
27This is why the ancients sung:
28"Honor (us) Moon; Reveal (to us) Moon"
